Fragrance of autumn
"I harvested rice just a week ago," the old man told me. He was burning straws being left on the ground to suppress weed. It was a good fragrance which heralded the coming of autumn.

I love your phrasing here...I too love that smell and think of autumn. My father used to burn tree branches etc in the autumn.
By the way, straw is uncountable in this case (because there are too many to count), but countable when we speak of straws used for drinking.

I used to make a bonfire when I was a kid. That was so enjoyable,
