Fragrance of autumn

"I harvested rice just a week ago," the old man told me. He was burning straws being left on the ground to suppress weed. It was a good fragrance which heralded the coming of autumn.

Twilight

A farmer was working in the field. Looking up the western sky, he saw the sun just going down. He stopped his work, and started walking toward the horizon. He never came back.

I have read such a story before, and I always recall it when I see the sunset. What was that at the end of his gaze?
